The NYT reported yesterday (page B3) that it, along with WNYC, WGBH, BBC, PRI, et cetera, will be launching a program to compete with ME starting this fall. Perhaps a concerted letter writing campaign to our local NPR affiliates, while cc-ing NPR, would be appropriate now. I have a long list of grievances I plan to share with NPR while expressing enthusiastic support for WNYC.

What is this "ME" that they will compete with??

ME = Morning Edition. NPR shorthand is pretty brief: ATC = All Things Considered, TOTN = Talk of the Nation, etc. It's about time their stranglehold on the morning 'drive' hours was busted up. Now, if every NPR affiliate could offer the same alternative, that would be progress. Start sweating, Inskeep!

Well, I'm still waiting for Marc Maron to get back on the air in that time-slot with a new "Morning Sedition".

I must say, I suspect a BBC-PRI offering (based on their "The World" offering) would probably be significantly less annoying than ME. I can only hope OPB (my local NPR affiliate) picks it up.

NPR is podcasting a program in development called Rough Cuts. They have a "blog" but they don't post all the comments.

They don't qualify their guests too well. They had a "political blogosphere" segment (http://www.npr.org/blogs/roughcuts/2007/03/living_in_the_studio.html
) and they had a guest on who's so out of touch with reality they think the US Attorney scandal isn't a big deal. Duh!

ME, not to be confused with MEEE-chel Norris!

Yes, I miss Marc Maron. If you are not on his e-mail list, I recommend it. He's very endearing. Rachel Maddow's the only Air America host I make sure to tune in to these days.

re: rough cuts. I love the Samuel Jackson tee shirt (with the Pulp Fiction image) that reads: "Say blogosphere one more time!"

Talk about out of it. I'm nigh on 47 and feel spry compared to the audience they must be going for -- BillO's "moderates" perhaps?

One thing I've noticed in the last few days is the determination of NPR to defend the Bush administration explanation on the firing of US Attorney Carol Lam.

As Josh Marshall (talkingpointsmemo) has argued, understanding the Lam firing is crucial to understanding the whole scandal. The Bush administration's explanation is garbage, as is NPR's defense of it.
