Reaper follow-up
I sent NPR a message containing basically what I wrote in my blog about the "reaper" story last month (All Things Considered, April 21). The response has been a series of jumbled, (mostly?) automated emails, never getting beyond platitudes. Another one came today. I bet that "review" they mention is a deeply probing, self-critical process.

Message from NPR
Dear Mr. Olson,

Thank you for adding your comments to our coverage of the Reaper. Your message has already been sent to the staff of "All Things Considered" for their review.

We are committed to presenting voices from many sides and giving our listeners the opportunity to make their own conclusions. This piece is just one in our complete coverage, which you can access on www.NPR.org. NPR is mindful of the journalistic principles that have guided us for more than three decades in producing news programs distinguished for impartiality and objectivity.

Hello comrades! (big eyewink here)

I heard today that my local affiliate (WNYC) is going to try to raise enough in one hour of ME to pay for two weeks of their crappy program. I plan on calling in (repeatedly perhaps) to explain why I will not be donating during this time slot. Yes, I will contribute -- later, but in no way is my contribution an endorsement of the NPR programming that this otherwise (mostly) great radio station broadcasts. (WTF is up with On Point?!!?) I have no intention of harassing volunteers, but I'm not opposed to tying up phone lines.

Find out if your affiliate is doing something similar. Perhaps we can get some attention.

Best,
Madam Dufarge

Ha! I love your nom de blog, madam, and your idea--hadn't thought of it. Jamming the phones during those "call in now and help us meet this generous listener's challenge!" pledge drives is a great way of inserting a message through yet another crack in the facade. "We need just 10 more calls this hour to meet that challenge!" Heh heh--make that 11. I'll be doing this next time the false cheer and repressed indignity of pledge drive week comes around.
