I heard word that Pvt. Garrels gave a defensive defense of her 'renegade' torture people story and why she thought she was doing her job correctly. Haven't heard it yet. Get ready for a tongue-lashing.
Predictably, I thought it was lame. Clear backpedaling. She says a whole list of things that, if she'd said them along with her report, the controversy would have been diminished. Then she gets defensive about what journalism should be, but it's apparent that she practices her own version of it. Clearly annoyed, Garrels also spoke somewhat haltingly. I think that she relies on her authoritative tone and tough-sounding persona to do much of the heavy lifting in her reports, and in this case especially, the substance is thin. To me her substance sounds like she's a publicist for Bush-oriented causes, if not a propagandist, and she's been found out, because she went a little too far.
Mytwords, your letter wasn't read on the air, but similar letters were.
My name is Matthew Murrey and I'm from Florida, but have been living in the Midwest since 1984. I started this blog because no one else was blogging NPR's drift toward the right - and it made more sense than yelling at the radio.
"Q Tips" is an open thread post where you can place general comments or brief notes about NPR.

I make every effort not to interfere with comments - BUT I will generally delete violent, gratuitously vulgar, or obscene posts. I realize it can be a subjective judgment call. Even when you're really angry, try to play nice.

Here's the address of Garrels' 'explanation', partnered with Inskeep:
