Y'know, when I get an e-mail alert from a venue whose mailing list I'm on and it announces a coming performer with the teaser "hailed by National Public Radio for ..." - that's not for me a very titillating byline, given their stodginess in dealing with near, well, everything.

I've always said that when a musical artist or band is featured on NPR that that's the death of their cool.

I think there are exceptions, though. In defense of Randy Newman, I could tell by the tone in his voice when he dealt with The Simonizer that his lil' interview on Nationalized Podunk Radio was something he HAD to do - part of the publicity job. Newman, wry gentleman that he is, was nevertheless gentlemanly with the tiresome Simonizer. As with his interview with George Carlin, Lli' Scottie seemed more befuddled by Newman than anything. Probably because of Newman's professional confidence - something that Scottie couldn't penetrate or erode.

PS: Hey b!p!, I've been a bit concerned about your latest (sic-ness)! Are you OK?

(hee-haw!)

PPS: Correction! It's 'Lil' Scottie. Wouldn't want to offend him or anything...

Thank you for your concern, Port. I think what innocuously began as acute anagramitis has developed into the compulsion for constant self-reinvention - and I'm not a Californian either!

Continuing the thread about 'hearin' it on NPR' my NoPR-detestin' but Check non-participant buddy had also noted how Nick Lowe seems to have earned permanent product placement on Gross Air!

Yes, the panegyric to Robert Gates this morning was absolutely disgusting. It was unbelievable.

yes, but it was so skillfully crafted. The reluctant young hero, the tragic fall, the will to power, the dramatic reclamation and ascension to his proper place at the helm.

JJ Sutherland turned craven sucking up to power into a literary calling. Nice job!
