This is not political, but do they ever stop asking for money? I turned on WBUR (Boston)this morning and heard that prince of twee, pretentious bullsh*t Ira Glass begging for money on some show that I gather is system-wide today. They just had one of those self-congratulatory fund raising fests last month. I read here that Inskeep makes $300,000+ per year. Well, there's a savings they cold make right there.

Perhaps they could ask us to ante up with the promise that Scott the Sermonizer will never sing again on NPR.

Today during a vapid interview with an 8 year old in Minnesota on the party she hosted where the guests voted for president, lil' Scotty punished us with his campaign song from his seventh grade election run for safety monitor.

My top candidates for helping NPR's budget problems, Inskeep, the Sermonizer and the woeful wailer, Liane Hansen.

It seems to be nationwide. On our station they were comparing a $1 slurpee to a slurpee of Inskeep or a slurpee of Montagne--seriously!
Slurpee - how appropriate!

Yeah, I heard Simon this morning with the student from MN, but I thought she was in eighth grade. I thought he was very condescending with her, but she just didn't buy it, polite, but abrupt answers. What got me was his way of adding (for those eighth graders) the bit about the Coleman and Franken election.
Also I love it when the girl told Simon that she'd probably not vote for him for safety officer of the school.

Ok, the the risk of just whining about NPR. This afternoon the news bulletin told of the Israeli attack on Gaza, stating the fatalities were "mostly Hamas." A couple of points: no mention of civilians killed; they omitted the current peace talks between Israel and Hamas (but didn't ask why the attack happened now) and failed to mention that the IDS had been planning this attack for months.

$300,000 per year is $150 per hour! (assuming 50 weeks at 40 houirs per week).

It is also 6,000 pledges of $50.

So, next time you think about giving $50, remember that Inskeep sucks that up in just 20 minutes sitting on his ass in the NPR studio.

Inskeep is hardly alone.

Michelle Norris makes 200,000+ and even the NPR Ombudsman makes 150K per year to make apologies for NPR hacks and write an idiotic blo.g

Before he left recently, NPR president Kevin Klose was sucking down close to half a million dollars a year. That's 10,000 pledges of $50.

NPR has become a massive money-making venture. That has become its entire reason for existence.

This morn our Grand Old Dan told Simon-sez-Sermons that Geo. W. Bush wouldn't be treated kindly by history 'anytime soon'.

Oh, and speaking of our restless, ever-ambitious Sat. morn host, I hear tell that he got to strut on Diane Rehm's show on Friday. His subject? Why, Chicago politics, of course. Who says Scottie doesn't earn his keep?

Poor NPR has hit "hard times" like everyone else.

NPR's Ombudsman Alicia Shepard explains in a blog post.

http://www.npr.org/ombudsman/

Interestingly, nowehere does she mention that her salary and benefits are well over $150,000 per year.

Also, interesting to those of us who would like to see NPR news go right down the propaganda tubes, Shepard explains that NPR depends totally on its local member stations for donations, which means the way to put NPR news out of business is to put a restriction on how your pledge (if you give one) can be spent -- ie, no part of it to buy NPR news.

There are lots of public radio programs that are worth money, just not NPR news, which has given public radio a bad name in recent years.

The 'slurpee' analogy is painfully accurate, given that the personalities in question are empty, saccharine , and guaranteed to fgive you a headache...

Unfortunately, it is impossible to support the good radio they do locally here without also 'supporting' the national feeds...

So I stopped...

Long-lapsed former member here too. As I often remark, they're not even fun to freeload off anymore.

Sorry, ombudsbot - times sho' iz ruff.

NPR would be FAR better without an ombudsman, at least of the type that they have now -- ie, an apologist for NPR reporters and management policies.

Shepard was hired by and serves at the pleasure of NPR management. The idea that she is "independent" of that management is simply a joke -- and not a very good one.

With th possible exception of her criticism of the Anne Garrels interview of the torture victims, Shepard has proved to be little more than an apologist for her employer. And her criticism of the former is certainly nothing to rest one's laurels on. Anyone with ANY journalistic ethics whatsoever would have done the same. The Garrels piece was absolutely grotesque propaganda.

A real ombudsman would have demanded Garrels' resignation over that little "incident".

It was simply inexcusable and demonstrates that Garrels herself has no journalistic ethics.

Apparently, Anne-of-Green-Zone Garrels' punishment was to be banished to Russia. Her penance: to flush out Bill Kristol-wetdream stories, in order to stoke the fires of the New Colder War. Oh, Annie's far from finished; Neocon Public loves her Camel-straights/belt-of-whiskey voice. As she's no wuss when it comes to torture, expect some rich gulag material to come your way soon.

Our ever-lovin', ever-drawlin' Lakshmi 'I-Pronounce-It-Pokk-EE-stawn' Singh today felt confident enough to state in her news recitation that 'some critics claim' that innocent bystanders have been hit in the latest attacks on Gaza. NPR School at its most classic: 'some critics'! Some news organization!

Excellent article here about the NPR decision to cancel "News & Notes":

News and notes was crap and certainly deserved to be canceled.

Not that ATC or Morning Edition are not crap as well...

RE: Anne Garrels being "banished" to Russia. She'd probably love it. Garrels spent part of the 90's in Moscow. Besides, there are probably some who would claim that NPR has nothing whatsoever to do with the decision about where Garrels is sent -- or how long she stays.
