So, of all the glaciers in Patagonia (mots of which are retreating), why did NPR choose to report on "one of the few that remains stable"(NPR's words)?
From wikipedia"In Patagonia on the southern tip of the continent, the large ice caps have retreated a full kilometer (0.6 mile) since the early 1990s and 10 km (6 miles) since the late 1800s. It has also been observed that Patagonian glaciers are receding at a faster rate than in any other world region.(BBC2) "
Perito Moreno Glacier is presently in equilibrium, but has undergone frequent oscillations in the period 1947–96, with a net gain of 4.1 km (2.5 miles). This glacier has advanced since 1947, and has been essentially stable since 1992. Perito Moreno Glacier is one of three glaciers in Patagonia known to have advanced, compared to several hundred others in retreat."

NPR did acknowledge the fact that most are retreating, but the coverage of one of the few that is not is most curious.
Especially coming on the heals o f the story "Antarctic Ice melt revised"
We're getting the same propaganda from NPR about Pakistan and Afghanistan that we got about Iraq.
The NPR journalist simply parrots the words of government officials as if they were gospel truth and has no clue about the history of the people.
If this is the sort of "journalism" that is being taught at our colleges and unversities, I'd simply have to say they should all have their accreditation revoked.
It's pathetic -- to say nothing of disgusting.
Here's NPR's take on the recent attack on Pakistan's Northwest frontier Province Residents Escape Fighting In Pakistan's Swat Valley
by Julie McCarthy "Pakistani authorities have temporarily lifted a curfew to enable thousands of people to flee the fighting in the militant bastion of Swat. More than 800,000 people already have left. The army launched the offensive northwest of Islamabad, last week to stop the spread of Taliban influence.
A top government official said the offensive near Afghanistan had already killed more than 1,000 Taliban fighters," //end NPR quotes

PARIS - Pakistan finally bowed to Washington's angry demands last week by unleashing its military against rebellious Pashtun tribesmen of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) -- collectively mislabelled "Taliban" in the West.
The Obama administration had threatened to stop $2 billion US annual cash payments to bankrupt Pakistan's political and military leadership and block $6.5 billion future aid, unless Islamabad sent its soldiers into Pakistan's turbulent NWFP along the Afghan frontier.
The result was a bloodbath: Some 1,000 "terrorists" killed (read: mostly civilians) and 1.2 million people -- most of Swat's population -- made refugees."
Well, obviously Mr. Margolis is shrill, and probably doesn't have a smooth, soothing radio voice. So who you gonna believe: the air-head with the cool, soothing voice, or the shrill guy with a by-line somewhere in FRANCE?
On KCRW, we get 10 minutes on the hour from American Public Media's Marketplace morning report.
This morning, Steve Chiotakis had warm, impromptu chat with Fortune Magazine's Allan Sloan about what the government can do to avoid a retirement disaster.
Did you know that there's "talk that the system just won't be there like it used to"? Sloan comes down off his throne to share with the little working peoples how the banks may not want to give them all that money they've been squirreling away like good little chipmunks unless they work until they die and don't ever become disabled. And did you know that people who work into their dotterage are less likely to suffer dementia? So we're going to watch out for a revolt of retiree's against "people who are upper income like me and I hope my children and presumably you, despite being a public radio person [heh] well, they can sort of save for their own retirement and supplement social security and in many cases aren't really counting on it - but you've got a lot of the average person still in this country doesn't really save anything, and they're going to need something somewhere down the road and if there isn't social security - I won't be here to know - but it's going to be really ugly." Chiotakis: "But you'll be thinking about it regardless (heh)." Sloan: "Right, I will be looking down from heaven and hoping, wishing you all well, but asking you not to send me the bill because I'll have no way to pay it you know among the heavenly hosts."
I hope that's all clear: when they take that money out of your paycheck for SS, it's going into Sloan's pocket and doesn't count as savings for you. "It's not really there," you see.

Yuck! Pert-near forgot about that Sloan dork. "The Sloooooooan Sessions" - I'd seldom to never heard such authoritarian circumlocution as that.
Thanks for the reminder that my current spate of wake-up calls are a tad less grating now (voices are oft more annoying at that time o' day as is).
