Wow, awesome, and scary. Horrifying, actually.

Did you put this together, and write these?

Ugh, I heard the "story" about the need to be fit and trim before qualifying to enlist, and thought, "WTF?" Didn't realize it was part of a major recruitment campaign.

I see that NPR has achieved record ratings. I hate to think about what that means.

Thanks for the information regarding NPR's ratings. They had leveled, and in some instances, declined slightly since 2003. No doubt the boffins at NPR will take this data to mean they are doing the right thing. Ugh, indeed.

Excellent entry, Myt!

What better way to give the overrated NoPR a well-earned red & sore fanny.

When I was in the U.S. Army in 1988, I saw my first neo-nazi in a U.S. Army uniform. In fact, there were 3 "former" neo-nazis in this unit that was "out-processing" from Fort Dix, New Jersey to be stationed in -- West Germany. At the time, it was fairly easy to identify them -- the nazi tattoos and the skinned heads -- both of which were (at the time) illegal but overlooked by the Army, it seems.

That was 21 years ago. I'm not sure how "new" this problem really is, because when I was in (1988-1994), it was a pretty calm time -- end of the Cold War and the beginning of the thaw. However, it would be interesting to know to what degree neo-nazism has been a problem in the U.S. military in past and to compare it to now.

By the way, all three of them were assaulted several times in the barracks during the 3 weeks or so that I was temporarily station in New Jersey. By the time they left for Germany that spring, all had cuts, bruises and black eyes, yet none of them reported the assaults to our superiors.

Love it. Nicely researched. The GRE thing sticks uncomfortably in my craw: it's just the "Murkin Peepal" are so out of touch with education, they think that a fake HS Diploma that gets you into soldiering is the equivalent of the GI Bill, which allowed people to recover from soldiering - by getting a real college education.
